As holiday celebrations ramp up across Maryland, state officials are urging residents to prioritize safety with the help of a $20 Lyft credit.
The move is aimed at preventing Marylanders who might be impaired by alcohol from getting on the roads. The initiative is sponsored by Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).
It’s the fourth holiday season that the rideshare credit has been offered to Maryland residents.
How to Access the Credit
Marylanders can claim the $20 Lyft credit by using the code MAKEAPLAN2024 in the Lyft app. To redeem the credit, open the app, navigate to the “Payment” section, and scroll to the “Add Lyft Pass” option. Once added, the $20 credit is immediately applied to the user’s account.
The credit, available since November 27, 2024, will remain accessible until January 2, 2025, or until supplies are exhausted. Unused credits expire within 24 hours but will return to the system for other users to claim.
If all codes have been redeemed, MVA advises that you check back periodically for additional codes to become available.
A Proven Strategy to Combat Impaired Driving
The holiday rideshare credit program continues to support Maryland’s goal of keeping roadways safe during one of the busiest—and riskiest—travel seasons of the year. With sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols conducted by Maryland State Police, this initiative adds a proactive tool to prevent impaired driving incidents. Ocean City, which has the state’s highest DUI/DWI conviction rate, is among the areas where the credit is particularly encouraged.
Sobering DUI Statistics in Maryland
- Arrests: Over 14,850 arrests were made for DUI in 2022.
- Accidents: Maryland experiences more than 8,000 impaired-driving crashes annually, with weekends between 8–11 PM being the most dangerous times.
- Injuries and Fatalities: Impaired driving causes over 1,000 serious injuries and accounts for 32% of traffic deaths in Maryland, averaging nearly 200 fatalities yearly.
During the holiday season, the risks increase significantly. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day in 2021, 1,616 impaired-driving arrests were made, contributing to Maryland’s focus on addressing this important safety issue.
Field Sobriety Checkpoints in Full Swing
You should be aware that Maryland State Police have been conducting sobriety checkpoints throughout the state, with heightened enforcement during the holiday season. These efforts underscore the importance of making responsible travel plans, especially during peak celebration times.
