Maryland police officer arrested for sex crimes

The Maryland State Police announced the arrest of Prince George’s County police officer who at the time was serving in his Department’s Bureau of Investigation. The officer faces multiples charges, including attempted second degree rape.

Police said that the alleged victim came forward with the allegations in late July, saying that she had an encounter with the former officer at her residence.

For its part, the Prince George’s County Police have relived the officer of all duties and have suspended his ability to act as a law enforcement officer. The Department’s own Internal Affairs Division has started its own investigation and says it is cooperating with the State Police.

Professionals facing sex crime charges will need a strong defense

Attempted rape in the second degree is a serious felony offense in Maryland. At worst, a conviction can land a person in prison for 20 years.

Moreover, the conviction will carry with it other severe personal and professional consequences. Aside from the stigma, the defendant will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and follow any rules associated with having to do so.

An offense can also mean that a person will not be able to work in his or her profession again; for example, the police officer who was recently arrested will likely not be able to work in law enforcement if he cannot refute these charges.

This officer will need to mount a strong defense to these sex crime charges.

After all, it seems that police arrest based on the say-so of the alleged victim, and the officer will need to tell his side of the story effectively. It will be important for him to evaluate his legal options carefully.
